Slavery. It is not dead. It is not gone. It is alive and it is thriving. In fact, there are more slaves today than there have been in any other point in history. There are an estimated twenty-seven million people, around the world, who are victims to some form of slavery.
Slavery has experienced a growth spurt within the last half-century. This incredible growth can be attributed to many factors, such as the global population explosion and corrupted governments, amongst other things. No place in the world has legalized slavery, yet there is currently no country that has solved the surging epidemic of human trafficking. There are an estimated 14,500-17,500 people trafficked every year into the United States. And, unlike the form of slavery that was abolished in the United States many years ago, slavery today is cheap. Worse yet, those sold into slavery are disposable. The people who find themselves in these situations are not even viewed as valuable, much less human.

Out of the thousands of people annually trafficked across various borders internationally, an overwhelming number of them are women and children. Many of these will be used in sex labor. Though there are several types of human trafficking, the United States alone has an estimated 46% done solely for use of the illegal sex industry, the rest falling into the categories of domestic work, agriculture, and sweatshops. (according to Free The Slaves)
But there is still hope. There are several agencies out there that are working restlessly to make a difference in the world and put an end to slavery of all types. Check out one of the groups we found making a difference in the world of slavery. Get behind them and do what you can to end slavery once and for all people.
